What are your admission options?

International students have several paths to their goals at University of Kansas:

• Students who meet full English proficiency requirements will enroll full time in their program, should they meet requirements listed by the school and department.
• Students who do not meet full English proficiency may also be admitted as degree-seeking and enroll in English language coursework at the Applied English Center (AEC), either concurrently or prior to their degree program.
• Students seeking to further their English language proficiency may enroll full time in the AEC.
• Students may participate in nondegree English language study at the AEC or nondegree academic study as part of Jayhawk Semester.

Are you an international student?

International Support Services can help you determine this. In general:

• Students who will enter the U.S. on any non-immigrant visa, as well as students in any non-immigrant status who are already in the U.S., are considered international students and will apply to KU through International Admissions.
• Students who hold or seek U.S. citizen or immigrant status are considered domestic students and should apply through KU Admissions. This includes students who have been approved or have applied for DACA or entered the U.S. without inspection.

Are you a transfer student?

You are considered a transfer student if you have taken any post-secondary courses after high school graduation — this includes college, university, and vocational coursework. Transfer students must submit academic records from all schools attended, including ESL programs. (Students on F-1 visas who wish to transfer from a school within the U.S. to KU should review International Student Services’ transfer-in policies.)

Standards and requirements

Admission will be granted to students who meet the following standard:

• A minimum grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale for all previous coursework, including transfer coursework.

Applications from undergraduate freshman and transfer students must include the following:

• KU’s $90 application processing fee, payable by credit card. IA cannot waive this fee nor accept the Common App fee waiver form.

• English proficiency scores sent to KU by your testing agency. Scores are used to either determine readiness for degree coursework or placement in appropriate ESL courses as needed. While scores must be included with your application, a minimum English proficiency score is not a requirement for admission. Learn more about English requirements.

• Proof of high school graduation particular to your country. Transfer students with more than 24 transferable credit hours do not need to supply these credentials. Learn more about admission requirements and credentials.

• Academic records in the form of unofficial transcripts. KU must receive official transcripts before you enroll in an academic program.

• A copy of the biographical info page on your passport. If you are in the United States in any status other than F-1 or J-1, also provide proof of status.

• If applicable: Third-party release page. Complete this part of the application if receiving outside assistance with submission.

• If applicable: SAT or ACT scores. Check the requirements for your school to see if it includes a score.

If, after high school, there was a period of time longer than three months that you were not enrolled in any educational program, you must write a short statement about your activity during that time. If you attended courses of any kind, include that information.

Earning readmission

If you previously earned grades as a degree-seeking KU student, you must apply for readmission. In addition to the application requirements listed above, you must account for your post-KU activity, describe it, and provide official transcripts of any schools attended since KU, proving good standing at those institutions. Readmit students observe these deadlines:

• Fall: July 1 for students outside U.S., Aug. 8 for students inside U.S.
• Spring: Nov. 15 for students outside U.S., Jan. 8 for students inside U.S.
• Summer: April 15 for students outside U.S., May 24 for students inside U.S.

Also observe the deadlines, policies, and requirements of the school or division to which you seek readmission. Late applications are considered on a case-by-case basis and may not be processed by the first day of classes. Readmission to KU is not guaranteed.
